Bed rails are very useful when you have small children who are now learning to sleep in a bed, as they can prevent them from accidentally rolling off the bed while they are asleep. Most double bunks always have a bed rail attached because they are so high above the floor and it is necessary in order to keep the person sleeping on the top bunk from falling off. They are also very good for elderly people living at home, who may not be able to walk properly without help and might wake up in the night without someone hearing and can fall and seriously injure themselves. Bed rails can also be seen in many hospitals and nursing homes as well as homes for the aged, as a precautionary measures for patients who may have problems sleeping, or in pain and who are more likely to get out of bed without any assistance and can injure themselves. There are many reasons why a bed rail is a good thing to have, but there are some down sides to it, for instance some people might feel like if they are in a prison with these bed rails installed, and some may even try to climb over the bed rail and do even more serious injuries to themselves. Some patients even get hostiles when bed rails are used as a means of restraining them and virtually making them feel like a prisoner. Another downside to bed rails is they may restrict a person from going to the bathroom when they need to and this can cause embarrassing accidents. Now of the bright side of why bed rails are a good thing, a patient can hold on to the bed rail and pull themselves up in a sitting position, allowing them to easily reach their personal items, or they can use the bed rails as a support for getting in and out of the bed. Some patients actually feel very comfortable when the bed rails are pulled up it gives them a sense of security. Probably the best use for bed rails is that they reduce the risk of a patient falling out of the bed while they are being wheeled to a different room. So with all that said bed rails can in fact save lives or at least prevent seriously bodily injury. If you have someone at home who sleep in a bed with a bed rail, you should look at the expression on their face the next time you raise the bed rail and when you pull it down to see if they might be having some bad feelings about the bed rails, and perhaps you can even bring up the topic to see how they will respond.
